A Collaborative Application for Managing Skills Testing (Cont'd)

Reporting (Cont'd)
To solve this problem, the reports were defined using XSL FO (XSL Formatting Objects). The data to be reported on was extracted from SharePoint lists as XML documents. Using an XSL FO tool, the XSL FO is merged with the XML to generate a PDF document. This PDF document is displayed using Adobe Acrobat Reader within a SharePoint Page:

The Outcome
Major benefits were obtained within a short period after deployment of the system. The task of reporting to the accounts department was taking weeks to complete with the Excel solution, and with the SharePoint solution the same reports were generated in a matter of minutes.

Through using the SharePoint List history facility, a track of all changes to tests, pilots etc. was maintained. This allowed much better handling calls from pilots, examiners and other interested parties.

The data held on pilots, examiners and tests can now be integrated with other collaborative applications within the organisation.

Skills
Want to learn the skills used in creating these types of applications? The following courses will get you started:

Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 for Power Users (3 days).
Building Collaborative and Workflow Applications with MOSS 2007 (3 days).
